WASHINGTON, Dec. 11, 2013 – Two U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft and a small command and support team are on the ground in Uganda, preparing to conduct airlift operations in support of ongoing peacekeeping operations in the Central African Republic, Army Col. Steve Warren, a Defense Department spokesman, said today.

The aircraft are expected to fly to Burundi tomorrow morning to transport a Burundian light infantry battalion to Bangui, Central African Republic, a Pentagon official said.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2013 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Minister of Defense Khawaja Asif, Minister of Finance Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Raheel Sharif, National Security and Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz, and other senior Pakistani officials today in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, Pakistan, Assistant Press Secretary Carl Woog said in a statement issued today.

Woog’s statement reads as follows:

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2013 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today that President Barack Obama has appointed Christine H. Fox to serve as acting deputy defense secretary.

Fox is a “brilliant defense thinker and proven manager,” Hagel said.

Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter departs tomorrow, and Fox is scheduled to assume her duties the following day, making her the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in the Defense Department. Until June, she served as the director of DOD’s Cost Assessment and Program Evaluation.
